The Trinamul’s “fact-finding” committee visited Allahabad’s Khaiwajpur on Sunday and assured family of five persons, who had been found murdered and their house set on fire on Saturday, that the party would demand a CBI probe into the incident citing lapses in investigation by Uttar Pradesh police.

“The victims’ family members don’t trust Uttar Pradesh police. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath should have visited the spot and met family members to understand the situation. We met the family members and want to take forward their demand for CBI probe into the mass murders,” said Dola Sen, Trinamul trade union president and head of the five-member delegation to the village.

Sen said even though a family member had claimed that two women had been raped before they were murdered, police did not record their statements and include the charges in the official complaint.

“The family members are distressed over police action and they are traumatised. They doubt if Uttar Pradesh police would deliver them justice. We met the district police chief and asked him to registrar a case of rape and murder. The UP police even did not arrest the person who is accused of threatening the family a month ago,” said Sen on Sunday evening after returning from the village.

Apart from Sen, other members of the team included Trinamul leader Saket Gokhale, Lalitesh Tripathi, Bengal minister of state Jyotsna Mandi and former Bongaon MP Mamata Bala Thakur.

Five members of a family — Ram Kumar Yadav, 55, his wife Kusum Devi, 52, daughter Manisha, 25, daughter-in-law Savita, 27 and granddaughter Minakshi, 2 — were found dead in village Khaiwajpur of Tharwai area in Allahabad district on Saturday morning. The police had said the five could have been murdered during a robbery.

Prashant Kumar, additional director general of police, law and order, had said, “Prima facie it appears a case of murder for the purpose of loot. The killers had set a room of the house on fire before leaving. We have deployed Special Task Force to nab the killers and ascertain the motive of the murders.”

However, no arrest has been made in the case so far.

Earlier, led by Durga Yadav, MLA from Azamgarh, a five-member delegation of the Samajwadi Party also met Sunil Kumar, son of Ram Kumar and other members of the victim’s family.

“Ram Kumar was a farmer and cattle trader. He was the lone earning member of the family. We demand from the government to give a compensation of Rs 1 crore and job to one member of the family,” said Yadav.

Sen accused Uttar Pradesh police for attempting to stop them at least four times to reach the spot of the mass killings.

“Yogi Adityanath’s police tried their best to stop us but failed as our local leader and former MLA Lalitesh Tripathi was present with us. He handled the police. We have revealed the truth about how lawlessness prevails in Uttar Pradesh,” said Sen.
