Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday expressed opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and vowed that the Trinamul Congress wouldn't do anything that went against the Constitution and the country's social fabric.

“What is the UCC? It is not at all clear. What its proposals are, nobody has concrete information on that,” the Trinamul national general secretary said while addressing journalists during a Meet the Press at the Calcutta Press Club. He was answering questions on his party’s stand on the UCC.

“What exactly needs to be uniform? There is no clarity,” added chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.

Till his statement, there was a certain degree of ambiguity on what Trinamul's approach to the UCC would be. Mamata, in her public address on Monday, had not cleared the air on the subject.

Specifically asked if Trinamul would oppose the UCC, Abhishek said: “Let me place this on record very clearly that Trinamul will never ever do anything that goes eventually against the spirit of the social fabric of the country or the Constitution, or that harms the essence of this very democracy.”

“So Trinamul will notdo anything in favour of any decision that is against the spirit of the Constitution,” he added.

The Diamond Harbour MP went on to champion India’s spirit of unity in diversity.

“India is not known for its uniformity, but its diversity. Our unity is in our diversity. India is known for its unity and its different cultures,” he said.

The Diamond Harbour MP said the Centre first needed to clarify what the UCC exactly consisted of. "How can you make uniform different cultures, food, clothes, religions and languages that we have?” he asked.

Abhishek has said the BJP ought to be made uniform and follow a code that is civil.

The Trinamul leader said the Prime Minister had not uttered a single word on Manipur and didn't have the guts to go to the northeastern state and face people.

Ethnic clashes have been convulsing Manipur for the past two months.
