The Trinamul Congress leadership is drawing up a plan to form separate committees for two Lok Sabha constituencies in Birbhum to manage the organisation before next year’s panchayat polls.
The plan is part of a stopgap arrangement in the absence of district Trinamul president Anubrata Mondal, who was arrested in the multi-crore cattle smuggling case.
Trinamul’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee proposed two such committees for Birbhum during a meeting he held at his Camac Street office in Calcutta with Birbhum MLAs on Friday afternoon.
“No one will replace Anubrata Mondal as district president but the party would form two separate committees for Birbhum and Bolpur Lok Sabha constituencies, which include three Assembly segments of East Burdwan as well,” said a senior Trinamul leader quoting Abhishek.
According to a senior leader, Trinamul is not in a position to replace Mondal as the district chief before the panchayat polls as it would send out a message that the party has dumped him after his arrest.
