A Trinamul Congress MLA has been accused of abusing and threatening a senior officer of Diamond Harbour district police.

Magrahat West MLA Giasuddin Molla denied the charge after a video emerged, purportedly showing him misbehaving with Diamond Harbour subdivisional police officer Mithun De on Sunday.

Sources said the MLA had gone to Usti police station on Sunday allegedly to get one of his close aides, who had been detained in connection with a murder, released.

“The MLA arrived at the police station and began abusing us. The SDPO was informed and he, too, came. As De arrived, the MLA began to abuse him also. The MLA said the cop was a two-penny servant,” said a police source.

Police sources claimed that while the MLA had kept threatening the SDPO, the police officer didn’t succumb to Molla’s pressure tactics. A police officer said the MLA had “apologised” to De before leaving the police station.

De, however, refused to speak in detail about the viral video. The SDPO told The Telegraph: “Nothing illegal was done. Whatever action police had taken was according to the law of the land.”

Trinamul insiders claimed that the alleged threat to the senior police officers had put a blot on local MP Abhishek Banerjee’s “Diamond Harbour model” that advocates a transparent and active administration.

Trinamul sources said the MLA had been cautioned for his “abusive behaviour” and Molla apparently expressed repentance for his action.

However, the public posture of the MLA was different from what party insiders had claimed.

I come from a good family. I am in politics but have never misbehaved with anyone. However, something needs to be told when you are faced with a situation. I will not speak any further, the party has asked me not to),” Molla, a former minister, said.

Admitting that the incident had embarrassed the party, Trinamul’s Magrahat block leader Imran Hasan: “The MLA’s behaviour is uncalled for. Our party does not endorse such behaviour. The block Trinamul leadership apologises for the incident.”

Top officers of the Diamond Harbour police district administration have expressed strong resentment against the MLA. They have apprised senior officers and the local MP of the incident.
