A youth from neighbouring Bihar was shot at and injured in North Dinajpur district on Wednesday night by a group that got “agitated” over repeated honking of his vehicle.

It is being alleged that among the attackers were the son and the nephew of a local Trinamul leader Feroze Ahmed. On Thursday afternoon, nephew Prince Ahmed, who is suspected to have opened fire, was arrested.

Taibur Rehman, 23, who is from Bango, a locality under the Baisi police station in Purnea district of Bihar, suffered a bullet injury in his left hand. He is under treatment at Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital.

Sources said that Rehman, along with two of his friends, came to Dalkhola town on the Bengal-Bihar border in an SUV and went to an eatery. While returning home at night, they found some local youths had parked their motorcycles on the road.

Rehman on Thursday recalled that those on bikes were chatting and their vehicles were parked in such a manner that their SUV couldn’t cross. "So we honked. Instead of providing a way for us, they started hurling abuses,” said Rehman.

The injured youth said he and his friends got down to ask the group to give way to their vehicle.

“Without any provocation, they attacked us. One of them took out a firearm and fired at us. One of the bullets hit my arm while another damaged the car’s windscreen. They then rode away,” he added.

He alleged that among the attackers were Md Asgar and Prince Ahmed, the son and nephew, respectively, of Feroze Ahmed, vice-chairman of the Trinamul-run Dalkhola municipality.

Rehman and his friends called up their family members, who informed police.

Rehman and his friends were first taken to the local health centre in Dalkhola. Later, he was shifted to the Raiganj hospital.

Swadesh Chandra Sarkar, the civic chairman of Dalkhola, said "no one will be spared".

Ahmed's phone was not reachable.
