A Trinamul leader in Raiganj was severely beaten up on Wednesday night allegedly by his in-laws as they disapproved of the marriage.
Anup Kar, a state general secretary of Trinamul Chhatra Parishad, suffered multiple injuries. Under treatment at Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital, Anup is critical.
“He had multiple fractures in his left wrist. We conducted a surgery and had it plastered. Also, blood has clotted in his head and there is a hairline crack in his back,” said a doctor.
Sources said around five months back Anup married Sreyoshi, the daughter of Amit Kundu, a trader in Durgapur, in Calcutta.
Initially, Kundu and his family members didn’t approve of the marriage. Eventually, it was decided that their marriage would be registered and till then Sreyoshi would stay at her father’s place.
Accordingly, she moved back to her father’s house a few weeks back.
Her parents called him up on Wednesday night to discuss the marriage registration process, he said. "Accordingly, I went there. But soon after I entered their house, they attacked me with rods and sticks,” said the Trinamul leader.
Sreyoshi, who realised that her husband’s life was at risk, put up a post on social media. Seeing it, Anup’s family members and some of his friends rushed to Kundu’s house.
They rescued him and took him to the RGMCH. Doctors examined him and decided to conduct surgery immediately.
Kundu, sources said, contested as a BJP candidate from Itahar Assembly seat in the 2021 elections. He lost and later joined Trinamul.
Sreyoshi, who fled from her house, told newspersons about the attack.
“My family is still against my marriage. That is why, they tried to kill my husband on Wednesday,” she said.
Anup’s family members filed a complaint with Raiganj police. The accused are absconding, a police officer said, adding that a search for them was on.
