A Trinamul Congress leader was hit by an arrow and assaulted when a group of 10 people attacked the party’s office in Cooch Behar district on Tuesday night.
Ananta Burman, the president of a panchayat-level Trinamul committee, was admitted to hospital. His condition was stated to be critical.
Burman and other local Trinamul leaders were chatting in the party office at Bhetaguri in the Dinhata subdivision when the attack occurred around 8.30pm.
“Burman was hit by an arrow and assaulted. Two other Trinamul leaders were also roughed up. We suspect the attackers who numbered around 10 belonged to the BJP. None of them could be identified,” said Bishu Dhar, a Trinamul leader in Dinhata.
Dinhata police reached the spot and took Burman to the subdivisional hospital. The police said the arrow had pierced his abdomen.
BJP leaders were not available over the phone to react to Trinamul’s allegation.
