Trinamul on Saturday launched a digital campaign asking people to share their idea of India, which its leaders said was aimed at highlighting “the party’s secular brand of politics as a counter to BJP’s divisive agenda”.
A media statement issued by Trinamul said a three-day campaign from Saturday aimed at bringing together “people of our diverse country with a unified idea of one nation”.
“The event is directed against the divisive agenda of the BJP and to strengthen the party’s national presence ahead of the 2024 general polls,” a Trinamul leader said.
In a pre-Independence Day tweet, party supremo and chief minister Mamata Banerjee spoke on upholding India’s democratic values and unity in diversity. “INDIA... Where diversity THRIVES despite differences. INDIA... Where people of varied cultures and religions peacefully COEXIST. INDIA... Where democratic values and people’s rights are UPHELD. Yes, this is our INDIA! Aren’t we all the proud people of this beautifully diverse land? For us, INDIA means UNITY. But, our ideas vary. What then, my fellow Indians, is your idea for this great nation? #MyIdeaForIndiaAt75”
Her party’s national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee tweeted: “INDIA, our PRIDE! INDIA, our STRENGTH! INDIA, our MOTHERLAND! For our nation’s glory, we Indians will achieve great milestones. For our nation’s betterment, we Indians will strive unitedly. WE, the people of INDIA. Our devotion to our motherland surpasses all. We uphold democratic values and people’s rights. Today, let us all SHARE our IDEA FOR INDIA, the beloved motherland which is celebrating its 75th year of Independence.”
The media statement announcing the campaign followed the tweets.
Neither the tweets nor the media statement spoke of the BJP directly, but Trinamul sources said the campaign was a strategy to counter the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign.
BJP leaders and workers are encouraging citizens to hoist the national flag in their houses on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
The Trinamul’s campaign “aims to instill a sense of national pride that does not involve the generation of hate, fear and division”, the media statement said.
“The #MyIdeaForIndiaAt75 campaign focuses on loving one’s country, rather than demeaning that of others,” it said.
“It also commemorates the freedom fighters whose ultimate act of patriotism and sacrifice was towards the protection of our nation.”
