The Trinamul Congress has tasked one of its MLAs to make a documentary film on the events of July 21, 1993, when 13 Youth Congress activists died in alleged police firing during a march to Writer’s Building led by Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamul’s Naihati MLA and chief of the party’s Dumdum-Barrackpore organisational district, Partha Bhowmick, will direct the film under the guidance of party national general secretary and Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Bhowmick, considered close to Abhishek, is a theatre director who also has knowledge about filmmaking.

Mamata observes July 21 every year as Martyrs’ Day and often sets the tone for her political forays from this stage. The film will be shown on social media platforms ahead of this year’s event.

“In the last organisational meeting of the party, which was presided over by Abhishek Banerjee to discuss the preparations for this year’s July 21 event, he assigned me this task. I’ve just begun working on it,” Bhowmick told The Telegraph.

“The film is primarily meant for the young members of our party. Many of them don’t have a clear idea about the importance of this day to Mamata Banerjee and the party,” he added.

“The film will include archived footage of the day, details of what our leaders were doing on that day, their interviews, stories of the families who lost their members to police brutality,” Bhowmick said.

Leaders including Trinamul state president Subrata Bakshi and minister Firhad Hakim have already been interviewed for the film.

Sources said the film might not mention Manish Gupta, who was the home secretary in 1993 and had faced Opposition criticism for the police action. Gupta later joined Trinamul and went on to become Bengal’s power minister and later a Rajya Sabha member.

Bhowmick refused comment on whether Gupta will find mention in the film.
