The Trinamul Congress legislative party on Wednesday announced it would table a motion condemning the Manipur turmoil in the Bengal Assembly on July 31.
The motion was decided on Monday. The date of tabling it was announced on Wednesday, and was approved by the business advisory committee of the Assembly on the same day.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, whose brainchild the motion was, would participate in the discussion in the House over the resolution.
“Bengal is an Indian state, as is Manipur. There is a so-called double-engine government there. Yet, whatever has been happening there is most unfortunate. So it is only natural that one Indian state will stand in solidarity with another,” said state parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay.
Trinamul leaders said the resolution would be part of a multi-pronged strategy conceived by Mamata, in order to ensure unwavering focus on the Manipur issue.
“Expect fireworks in the House (from Mamata),” said a senior Trinamul MP from Delhi, where the party has been belligerently raising the Manipur issue inside and outside Parliament.
The Trinamul chief, who has been one of the loudest voices of criticism against the Narendra Modi government and the BJP over the Manipur situation since May, has intensified her attack since Thursday, in the wake of the horrific visuals of two women being paraded naked and physically assaulted in the northeastern state.
She has floated the idea of a Manipur peacemaking visit by a team of chief ministers from the 26-party Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
From her Martyrs’ Day rally speech on Friday, where several core segments of her 41-minute address were devoted to Manipur, it was apparent that Mamata believes it might snowball in the run-up to the general election next year into the BJP’s Waterloo.
“Prime Minister Modi's increasing defiance on Manipur clearly shows we have managed to get under his skin with this one,” said a Trinamul Rajya Sabha member.
The Bengal BJP said the state government should first discuss the alleged plight of women here, who, according to the BJP, are daily subjected to assault. On Wednesday, some BJP MLAs, led by Agnimitra Paul, tried bringing an adjournment motion on the issue. Speaker Biman Banerjee denied permission, saying it was not tabled in adherence to due process. BJP MLAs staged a protest inside the House and walked out. They continued their protest in the portico of the Assembly.
