Trinamool on Sunday announced its candidates for the six November 13 Assembly bypoll seats, a day after the BJP came up with its list.

A Trinamool news release announced its nominees for the Assembly seats of Sitai, Madarihat, Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur and Taldangra.

Sangita Roy, the wife of Trinamool Cooch Behar MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, will contest from the Sitai. The seat fell vacant as Basunia, who had won in 2021, had to resign as MLA after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Sangita heads the Sitai panchayat samiti.

For Madarihat, a seat in Alipurduar district held by the BJP, TMC picked Jay Prakash Toppo, a young party worker, as the candidate.

The party named Falguni Singha Babu for Taldangra, Sujoy Hazra for Medinpur, Sheikh Rabiul Islam for Haroa and Sanat Dey for Naihati.

Rabiul is the son of Haji Nurul Islam, the Basirhat MP who recently passed away. The other three have been grassroots leaders for years, said sources.

“Candidates have been selected from diverse backgrounds as the party intends to strengthen its message of secularism, equality and empowerment,” said the TMC release.

In 2021, TMC had won five of these six seats. The BJP had won Madarihat.
