Four Trinamul Congress workers were injured, two of them critically, in an armed clash between the supporters of the ruling party and the CPM at a village in Murshidabad’s Domkal on Monday evening.
A police source said two with bullet wounds were admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Doctors said their condition was critical.
“Four persons were injured in a clash at Tulsipur village in Domkal. We have detained eight persons. Raids are on,” said Murshidabad police chief Surinder Singh.
Sources said the clash broke out when CPM workers, who had taken out a rally for the July 8 rural polls, retaliated against an attack allegedly by armed Trinamul-backed goons around 5pm.
CPM and Trinamul leaders denied the charges, each blaming the rival party.
Nadia violence
Six BJP workers, including the brother of the party's Ranaghat South MLA Mukutmani Adhikari, were injured in a clash with Trinamul supporters in Nadia’s Krishnaganj late on Sunday.
The BJP alleged Trinamul-backed goons hurled bombs at Krishnaganj's Naghata around 11pm. When the BJP activists tried to resist them, it led to the clash, injuring the MLA's brother Anupam and five others. Denying the charges, Trinamul accused the BJP of attacking its supporters.
Bombs fly in BJP-TMC clash
Calcutta: Six BJP workers, including the brother of the party's Ranaghat South MLA Mukutmani Adhikari, were injured in a clash with Trinamul supporters in Nadia’s Krishnaganj late on Sunday night.
BJP leaders in the area alleged that the goons, with the support of local Trinamul supporters, hurled bombs to terrorise people at Krishnaganj's Naghata around 11pm on Sunday. When the BJP activists tried to resist them, it led to the clash.
Anupam Adhikari, a hardware shop owner and the younger brother of MLA Mukutmani Adhikari, suffered head injuries and was admitted to the Nadia district hospital in Krishnanagar along with one Trinamul supporter.
BJP supporters on Monday morning protested near Bhajanghat crossing, blocking the Krishnanagar-Hanshkhali road, to demand arrests of culprits.
Trinamul supporters demonstrated in front of Krishnaganj police station, demanding Anupam's arrest.
The police began a probe on the basis of two rival complaints and arrested three persons, including two suspected Trinamul supporters.
Speaking to reporters, Mukutmani said: “It was a planned attack by Trinamul. If free and fair polls are held, the BJP will win most seats. Trinamul leaders have realised it and are terrorising people.”
Denying the charges, Trinamul’s Krishnaganj block committee chief Laxman Ghosh Choudhury said: “BJP supporters led by the MLA’s brother hurled bombs at our activists when they were resting in a field after campaign. When our supporters resisted, a clash broke out."
