Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday underwent a surgical procedure at a private hospital off the EM Bypass here, following which his condition was reported to be stable, according to hospital authorities.

The Trinamool national general secretary and MP was released later in the day.

According to the evening edition of Trinamool’s mouthpiece Jaago Bangla, the 36-year-old nephew and heir apparent of chief minister Mamata Banerjee was admitted to the hospital at 8.05am, with a stomach ache. A medical team was formed thereafter, and various tests were conducted on him to assess his vitals.

Jago Bangla stated that under the supervision of plastic surgeon Adhish Basu, a microsurgery was conducted on Abhishek, and he was released hours later. Sources in the party said he was advised to rest at home under medical supervision for a couple of days, following which he could resume normal life.

However, it remained unclear whether Sunday’s developments were unrelated to the Diamond Harbour MP’s recent statement on social media, announcing a “short hiatus” from the party organisation, which he had attributed to some “pressing medical reasons”.

“In light of some pressing medical reasons, I will be taking a short hiatus from the organisation. This time off will be an opportunity for me to humbly explore and understand the needs of our people and community,” he wrote in a post last Wednesday, after co-leading with his aunt a gruelling campaign he planned through the harsh summer for the crucial general election to deliver a triumph for Trinamool in Bengal — 29 Lok Sabha seats.

It is also not clear if the medical reasons he referred to in his post have to do with his chronic ocular problem.

Abhishek has been undergoing treatment in India and abroad since an October 2016 highway crash near Singur in which he critically injured his left eye. In August last year, he went to the US for one such round of treatment.

Most in the senior leadership of the party have refused to entertain speculation over whether this had anything to do with rumours of a rift between Abhishek and Mamata.
