A Trinamul Congress worker was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the murder of BJP activist Adhir Sarkar during an immersion procession in Nadia district on Wednesday night.

Sarkar, 65, a resident of Baro Jiakur village, was dragged out of the procession by some youths, who beat him to death at the Aarpara market near Santipur.

The arrested person is Gokul Das, who was named in an FIR filed by Sarkar’s son. Sarkar was the BJP’s booth committee vice-president at Baro Jiakur.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded the immediate arrest of all culprits involved in the murder and asked police to act without any political prejudice. He paid tribute to Sarkar in Ranaghat on Thursday.

Accusing the police of inaction, the leader of the Opposition alleged that BJP workers were “paying price with life” since they had toiled hard to defeat Trinamul in the July 8 panchayat polls.

Reacting to Adhikari’s allegations, Trinamul state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the BJP supporter had died because of an “internal dispute”.

Ghosh wrote on X: “ it’d be hardly surprising for a @BJP4Bengal karyakarta to fall victim to the internal disputes & animosities that have been escalating among the party ranks in recent months”.

“In any case, the police are actively investigating the matter and will bring the guilty to justice. Meanwhile, the LoP should refrain from making baseless speculations and sensationalizing the situation,” he added.

Earlier in the day, BJP supporters blocked NH12 at Phulia for about two hours to protest Sarkar’s murder.
