Sources said a team from the district administration had gone to Konamukta in Gitaldaha 1 panchayat in the Dinhata subdivision to check the credentials of the prospective beneficiaries whose names were included in the list.

Roshna Khatun and Dolly Khatun, TMC members of the local panchayat, were present in the village.

As the team commenced the survey, Mozammel Haque, a TMC support and an associate of Dolly, asked the officials to show them the list to know whether the names of certain villagers were on the list.

This made the followers of Roshna protest and they told Haque that the list couldn't be made public unless it was finalised.

An altercation ensued and soon, both sides attacked each other with bricks, sticks, and rods. A police team reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

“We suspect that they have, in a planned manner, struck off the names of genuine beneficiaries from the list. Otherwise, there was no reason for such objection and attack,” said Haque, who got injured in the attack.

Atikur Rahaman, who is also Dolly’s follower, was also injured. He is in a critical condition.

District TMC leaders said the incident was unfortunate. “A section of supporters is getting over-enthusiastic. But they should understand that the list has to be error-free and cooperate with the teams instead of resorting to such moves which affect the law and order situation,” said a party functionary.

Sources in the administration said despite the incident, the team completed the survey at the village. “We are collating the data and readying the final list at the district level,” said an official.

Mother murdered

A 56-year-old woman in Malda was hacked to death allegedly by her 30-year-old son on Tuesday when she refused to pay 20 to him.

Sources said the deceased Arati Sinha from the Madhyam Kendua village under the jurisdiction of Habibpur police station was a jute mill worker and the sole earner of the family. The police arrested her son Kaushik.
