Railway traffic on the down track between Rangapani and Chatterhat stations in Darjeeling district resumed on Tuesday morning, 23 hours after a goods train had rammed into the Agartala-Sealdah Kanchenjunga Express.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said the track was ready for traffic around 7.30am on Tuesday.

“The first passenger train passed through the down track at 10.42am. The traffic on up line had resumed around 5.40pm yesterday,” said Sabyasachi De, the chief public relations officer of the NFR.

Although the accident-hit track was restored, the trains were moving at a snail’s pace. So, the NFR cancelled five trains on Tuesday. They are up and down Shatabdi Express between NJP and Howrah, up and down Intercity Express between Siliguri Junction and Katihar, and Siliguri-Jogbani Intercity Express.

NFR sources said three more trains connecting north Bengal and the Northeast on Wednesday were cancelled. “Two long-distance express trains from the Northeast have been rescheduled and three other trains, including a Rajdhani Express, were diverted through the NJP-Siliguri Junction-Aluabari Road route,” De said.
