The 63-year-old marginal farmer, who had come to Burdwan on work, was waiting at the Burdwan station to catch a train to go back to Memari when the tank collapse occurred.

"Sutradhar was admitted with severe injuries to his scalp, ribs and waist. Despite the efforts of our doctors, he succumbed to his injuries, " said Tapas Ghosh, the medical superintendent and vice-principal of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

Sutradhar's body was handed over to the family on Sunday.

"My father was on his way home. He was waiting to board a local train at platform 2. The sudden fall of the water tank led to my father's death," said bereaved son Gopal Sutradhar on Sunday.

An official in the hospital said that there were at least a dozen more patients undergoing treatment with multiple injuries suffered in the tank collapse at the station.

"However, the condition of all of them is currently stable," an official at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

The railways have announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for the next of kin of each of those who died and Rs 50,000 for each of those injured in the accident.
