Police have arrested Israfil Seikh, 41, a Trinamul worker, from Nadia’s Narayanpur in connection with the murder of party’s minority wing leader Motirul Islam, who was shot dead by goons at Nowda in Murshidabad district on Thursday evening.

Police said the accused was arrested on the basis of a submission made by a civic volunteer accompanying Motirul at the time of the alleged attack.

Motirul’s wife Rina Khatun Biswas, a Trinamul leader and pradhan of Narayanpur-2 block, lodged a complaint at Nowda police station on Friday where she accused 10 persons of being behind the murder.

The accused who were named in the FIR included Nadia Trinamul’s women’s wing leader and zilla parishad member Tina Saha Bhowmick and Nowda block president Safiur Zaman Seikh.

But Israfil Seikh, who was arrested on Saturday, did not figure among the 10 accused named in the FIR lodged by Rina.

Israfil was produced before Berhampore district court which sent him to seven days in police custody.

Murshidabad SP Surinder Singh spoke briefly about the arrest.

“One person has been arrested on the basis of certain clues. We have taken him in custody and hope to arrest others involved in the murder very soon,” the SP said.
