Indrabhusan Shaw, 20, a Trinamool worker and son of a party leader, was arrested by police in Sandeshkhali on Sunday, in connection with an alleged attempted rape of a minor girl on Friday night.
The accused was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Basirhat on Sunday, which ordered him five days in police custody.
On Friday night, the accused allegedly entered the house of the girl in a village in Sandeshkhali and tried to tried to rape her while gagging her mouth.
The girl, aged 15, managed to somehow escape and alerted family members who rescued her.
But the accused, who is an active Trinamool worker, managed to flee.
On Saturday, BJP leader Archana Majumdar took the victim to Sandeshkhali police station and lodged a complaint against Shaw.
The police, on the basis of the complaint, began a probe into the allegations, charging the accused under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso).
Hossain Mehedi Rehman, the chief of the Basirhat police district, said: "The accused arrested on the basis of the complaint. He has been produced in court."
The accused was detained on Saturday night for questioning, and was arrested later.
A separate complaint was also filed before the CBI, which has set up a camp on the troubled island according to a Calcutta High Court order to conduct investigations into the alleged atrocities against women by local Trinamool leaders.
The CBI later forwarded the complaint to Sandeshkhali police for a probe.
Villagers claimed that ever since a purported video went viral, in which a BJP leader seen claiming that the rape complaints in Sandeshkhali were scripted by the BJP, criminals with proximity to Trinamool have been threatening them and even attacking them with rape attempts.
"The Friday night attack on the girl was with the purpose to unleash terror in the island and among the people who protested against atrocities by goons close to (suspended Trinamool leader) Sheikh Shahjahan," BJP leader Archana Majumdar claimed.
Sandeshkhali, a tiny island in the Sunderbans in North 24-Parganas, has been a burning poll issue in Bengal this time. The island under the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat has seen women leading an agitation against alleged atrocities by local Trinamool leaders. While the BJP has picked up the issue, Trinamool has accused the saffron camp of "scripting" the charges.
