Trinamul Congress’s Banasree Chatterjee has won the municipal election in Bangur Avenue (Ward 29 of South Dum Dum Municipality) by over 8,500 votes. She got 9,583 votes, while the BJP and the CPM trailed with 951 and 949 votes respectively.
Polling was held on June 26 and the result declared on Tuesday. The ward went to polls after staying four years without a councillor. The elections could not happen earlier due to a court case in which the verdict was given earlier this year.
Trinamul supporters took out processions in Bangur Avenue and Lake Town. MLA Sujit Bose congratulated Chatterjee on her debut win. “This is a huge achievement but it comes with a responsibility,” said Chatterjee. “My first job will be to set up a government health centre in the Bangur Avenue-Lake Town area. The footpaths need to be repaired,” she told The Telegraph Salt Lake.
The CPM trailed the BJP by just two votes. “The BJP has lost a lot of votes while the CPM has increased its share. This shows that religious fanatics have no place in Bengal,” she said.
