The student wing of the Trinamul Congress on Wednesday said they would hit the streets to protest against the “clueless” economic policies of the central government and the continuous surge in fuel prices.

The announcement came on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Opposition-led state governments, including Bengal, of not foregoing VAT on fuel to ease the economic burden on the people.

According to a statement issued by Trinankur Bhattacharya, the chief of the Trinamul student wing, a rally will be organised on Saturday from Rajabazar to Shyambazar in Calcutta to protest against the economic crisis hitting the state because of the wrong policies of the Centre.

“The rally will highlight how the clueless economic policies of the Union government have led to a national debt of almost Rs 155 lakh crore, increased unemployment at all-India level, failed to generate new job opportunities and contributed to continuous rise in fuel prices,” a Trinamul Chhatra Parishad leader said.

He added the poor law and order in BJP-ruled states and the saffron camp’s continuous effort to disturb peace in Bengal using the tool of religious polarisation would be among the issues that would be protested against at the rally.

Sources in Trinamul said the party would continue its attack on the Centre on issues of price rise.

Around 20 members of families hit by violence following the publication of Assembly poll results last year will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday. The family members, who owe allegiance to the BJP, will be accompanied by 10 members of Lawyers for Justice.

The Lawyers for Justice is an organisation affiliated to the BJP.

Later, this group, along with the lawyers, will participate in a candle light march from Patiala House Court to Tilak Marg Parking in Delhi.

Sources in the BJP said the events on Saturday were planned as a part of the party’s efforts to showcase nationally that there was no rule of law in Bengal and justify its demand of invocation of the President’s rule in the state.

Incidentally, chief minister Mamata Banerjee is supposed to reach Delhi on Saturday.
