Two councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have been show-caused by the Trinamool Congress for their recent feud that led to violence and an assault on one of them.
The councillors are Swaraj Mondal of Ward 110, which covers parts of Baishaabghata-Patuli and Garia, and Tarakeswar Chakraborty of Ward 104 spread over Garfa and Survey Park area.
“Mondal and Chakrabarty have been show-caused for their activities that have brought dishonour to the party. This has been done under instructions from chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the support of Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national secretary and Subrata Bakshi, the party’s state president,” said Jayprakash Majumder, Trinamool’s state vice-president.
On Tuesday night a group of Trinamool workers had allegedly attacked Mondal when he stepped into the party office near Patuli playground and went to sit on his chair.
The workers said the chair was meant for Majumder, the local MLA, when he visited the office and Mondal was not entitled to use it.
The councillor protested saying he had set up the party office and vacated the chair every time Majumder visited.
A heated exchange of words ended in Mondal receiving blows on his ear and face that left him with bleeding injuries. The attackers allegedly belonged to the camp led by Chakrabarty, also the chairman of the borough.
Mondal has lodged a complaint with Patuli police station, an act that left a section of the Trinamool brass shaken. The complaint by a councillor against another came within days of a similar tussle between two groups owing allegiance to two councillors that played out in Kasba’s Ward 107.
“The party’s internal discipline committee has taken strong note of the events that occurred in Patuli and both the councillors have been given a week to respond to the show-cause notices,” said a senior Trinamool leader.
The police said they were collecting the names of those who were present at the scene on Tuesday night.
