The Malda district administration on Friday demolished an office of the Trinamul Congress and an adjacent club in Ward 12 of Old Malda municipality following a Calcutta High Court directive.

Both the office and the club had come up on land owned by the state public works department (PWD).

On Friday morning, a team comprising administrative and police officials reached the spot and deployed a bulldozer to demolish the structures.

A senior official said a writ petition was filed in the high court mentioning that the constructions were made on PWD land. The court ordered the structures to be demolished within 45 days.

“We complied with the order of the Calcutta High Court,” he said.

Bibhuti Bhushan Ghosh, a Trinamool councillor and a former civic chairman, was dismayed by the demolition. It also disappointed some TMC workers who are members of the club called the Angry Youngs’ Club.

Though they didn’t resist the demolition drive, they were quick to claim that no notice was served to them. They alleged that a fuel station owner had filed the case and instigated the administration to demolish the party office and the club.

Anjan Haldar, the club’s president and a local Trinamul leader, said they had earlier removed a part of the club room as instructed by the state PWD for widening the road. “But this time, the entire construction and the Trinamool office were bulldozed,” he said.

Ghosh, the Trinamul councillor, said he used to sit at the party office during the evening hours to meet the locals.

“No prior notice regarding the demolition was served. Or else, we would have taken the necessary steps,” he said.
