A Trinamul MLA and his aides in North Dinajpur's Islampur were reportedly beaten up by police and central forces late on Tuesday when they tried to enter a counting centre.

Hamidul Rehman, the MLA of Chopra, has been admitted to a private nursing home and two of his aides are being treated at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.

Sources said Arjuna Begum, Hamidul’s daughter, stood as a rebel Independent for a zilla parishad seat.

Sources said that on Tuesday night, when the MLA and his aides tried to enter the Islampur High School counting centre, the police and central forces charged at them with batons.

Local BJP leaders accused him of trying to rig votes, which he denied.

On Wednesday, it emerged that Arjuna lost to Trinamul's official candidate Moushumi Khatun.
