A Trinamul leader who had been shot at and hacked by unidentified motorcyclists in Birbhum’s Khoirasol on Sunday succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Durgapur on Monday.
Dipak Ghosh was Trinamul’s Khoirasol block committee president.
Police have detained seven persons, including three who were arrested in connection with an attempt on Ghosh’s life in December.
The officer in charge of Kankartala police station, under which a part of Khoirasol falls, was removed on Monday night.
Sources said Trinamul leaders were in a dilemma about lodging a complaint.
“A rival group in the party was behind the murder. But after the incident, the district leadership is blaming the BJP. So, we are waiting for the approval from the leadership as to against whom we should lodge an FIR,” said a Trinamul leader.
A doctor at the Mission Hospital in Durgapur said: “The patient died due to excessive loss of blood that led to low blood pressure and a cardiac arrest.”
Ghosh had received three bullets — in the neck, waist and shoulder.
Another doctor said: “We gave the patient all support for survival but he passed away at 1.09pm today (Monday).”
On Monday evening, the body of Ghosh reached his home in Khoirasol where some district Trinamul leaders, including the local Dubrajpur MLA, Naresh Bauri, and Suri MLA Ashok Chatterjee, offered floral tributes.
“I could not go there but I sent two MLAs and the sabhadhipati to stand beside the family of Dipak Ghosh,” Birbhum Trinamul president Anubrata Mondal told The Telegraph.
