TMC leader and tea planter Krishna Kumar Kalyani passes away

Kalyani, who owned a number of tea estates and also forayed into tea tourism, had been the Jalpaiguri district Trinamul president thrice

Trinamul Congress leader and tea planter Krishna Kumar Kalyani died at a private nursing home here on Wednesday early morning. He was 71.

Kalyani, who owned a number of tea estates and also forayed into tea tourism, had been the Jalpaiguri district Trinamul president thrice.

After his third stint as the district president, Kalyani was inducted into the state committee of Trinamul and was made one of its state secretaries. He had been in the post till his death.

Sources said Kalyani was suffering from breathing problems and was hospitalised. The last rites would be conducted here on Thursday, family sources said.

Several Trinamul leaders, including chairperson and chief minister Mamata Banerjee and allIndia general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, condoled Kalyani’s death.

“I extend my profound grief at the untimely demise of Krishna Kumar Kalyani, a leading tea industrialist from North Bengal, early today. I knew him well as a leading face of Ma Mati Manush in Dooars and extend my sincere condolences to his family and followers,” Mamata said in a tweet.
