BJP leader Mukul Roy on Sunday said Trinamul didn’t have an ideology and was on the verge of elimination in Bengal as it had lost its political relevance following the decimation of the Left Front.

“Trinamul was born to oppose the CPM in Bengal. Now, with the CPM and the Left parties losing their bases in Bengal totally, Trinamul, too, is fast losing its relevance and is on the verge of elimination,” Roy told a news conference at the Bengal BJP headquarters in Calcutta.

Roy, who proved to be a “prize catch” for the BJP, questioned the “political ideology” of his former party — Trinamul.

“It is a party with no political ideology, has no foreign policy, nor has a pan-India outlook. Its rise was only restricted to oppose the CPM and nothing else,” Roy said.

The former No 2 in Trinamul also said except some states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, regional parties would gradually become irrelevant.

Sources in Trinamul said Roy was making such statements only to give signals to Trinamul leaders and workers to join the BJP en-masse ahead of the Assembly polls in 2021.

“(Narendra) Modi openly announced in a poll campaign that 40 Trinamul MLAs were in touch with him. Later, Dilip Ghosh (Bengal BJP chief) also said over 100 Trinamul MLAs were in talks with him. Now, Mukulda is making such irrelevant statements to create split in the party,” said a veteran Trinamul leader.

Asked who would join the BJP from Trinamul following the May 23 results that gave the BJP an overwhelming majority across the nation and a handsome victory in Bengal with 18 out of 42 MPs, Roy said: “As I said Trinamul is fast losing its political relevance, both leaders and workers are in talks with us to join the saffron brigade. I do not want to name them now. When they join, we will make it public.”

Roy described as a “total political drama” Mamata Banerjee’s statement that she had offered to resign as the chief minister and take a full time job of the party chairperson.

“Nobody now believes Mamata. Her offer to step down as the chief minister is a total drama to make media headlines. People now understand all this,” said Roy, who was once the most trusted lieutenant of Mamata.

The BJP leader also said Mamata had insulted Muslims by “comparing them with cows”. “Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said she would appease Muslims and saw no harm in taking kicks from a cow that gives milk. The Muslim community should think after such an insult.”
