A Trinamul councillor of Raiganj municipality has been accused of assaulting an employee of the civic body on Tuesday evening.

Ananda Maitra, who is the manager in charge of a Centre-run urban employment scheme, Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana, was allegedly beaten up by Abhijit Saha, the Trinamul councillor and member, chairman-in-council, in the municipality.

Sources said that on Tuesday, Maitra was busy with a Duare Sarkar camp in the town. At that time, Sandip Biswas, the civic chairman, called him up on his cell phone. Before they could finish their talk, Maitra said, his cell phone died as the battery had no charge left.

“Later in the evening, as I went to the civic body, Abhijit Saha called me in his chamber. I went and met him. He was furious and accused me of not calling back the civic chairman. I clarified to him that my cell phone had died. He however, went on abusing me and suddenly started beating me without reason. It is humiliating for any employee of the civic body. I want the police to take steps,” said Maitra.

Other employees came and rescued Maitra and took him to the RGMCH. He filed a complaint with Raiganj police.

Saha, however, denied the charges. “I have not beaten him (Maitra). He is involved in corruption. Because I sought clarifications from him, he is raising baseless allegations against me,” Saha said.

Sandip Biswas, the civic chairman, said he was out of station but would speak with both Saha and Maitra soon.

“I will try to find out what exactly happened. Our party does not endorse such acts,” Biswas said.
