BJP and Trinamul supporters got into a scuffle at a village of Siliguri subdivision on Tuesday in front of the members of a central team that arrived to check out if eligible persons were included in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana beneficiaries’ list.
Policemen present at the spot had to intervene to disperse both sides. While Trinamul alleged that BJP supporters were trying to influence the team, the saffron camp accused Trinamul of not letting them meet the team members.
On Tuesday morning, as the two-member central team reached Tambari village in Phansidewa block, around 25km from Siliguri, some villagers known to be BJP supporters, met them.
BJP supporters said they appealed to the team to check if those with genuine claims are in the PMAY list.
“Some Trinamul supporters, however, resisted. They didn’t want us to mention there had been corruption over the inclusion of names of beneficiaries in the PMAY list,” said Anil Ghosh, a BJP supporter.
Chandan Roy, a local Trinamul leader, denied the charges. “No villager was stopped to meet the team. Some BJP supporters tried to influence the team with political intentions,” he said.
Central team members visited Tambari, Purba Dhudiajote village and the BDO’s office in Phansidewa.
The central team members and block administration officials did not comment on the visit. Police are monitoring Tambari.
In Malda, a central team spoke with Asha and ICDS workers, surveying beneficiaries in the PMAY list, in Ratua-I block on Tuesday
