The Bidhannagar commissionerate has sent a notice under Section 41A of CrPC to actor-turned-Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty, who was caught on camera assaulting a cafe owner in New Town late on Friday, police said.

Cafe owner Anirul Alam has also been served a similar notice.

According to a senior officer in the commissionerate, a notice under Section 41A of CrPC is sent to an accused who has to appear before the police for questioning.

Bidhannagar police commissioner Gaurav Sharma said a probe was on and the police were “investigating the case from every angle”.

“We have sent notices under Section 41A of CrPC to both (Chakraborty and Alam). There are areas which the cafe’s CCTV doesn’t cover and we are trying to ascertain what exactly happened and figure out the sequence of events,” Sharma told Metro.

Footage from a CCTV camera, installed in the ground-floor lobby area of the cafe, emerged on Saturday. It showed Chakraborty, the MLA from Chandipur in East Midnapore, holding Alam by his collar, slapping him and pushing him to the ground. He is then seen dragging Alam out as many other men surround the two.

Chakraborty has also been accused of threatening to shut down Alam’s business.

Another senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said three complaints had been lodged with Techno City police station.

On Saturday, the cafe’s manager, Dipankar, lodged a complaint against Chakraborty, who filed a counter-complaint. The third complaint was lodged by the owner of the cafe.

Chakraborty has claimed that only a part of the CCTV footage is being shown and the portion that captured Alam and others attacking the MLA’s guards and members of the shooting unit had been deleted.

On Monday, Alam said he was cooperating with the police in every aspect. “My staff and I are cooperating in every way with the police. What happened has been recorded and we have shared the footage with the police,” said Alam.

Chakraborty did not respond to calls from this newspaper. Nor did he reply to a text message seeking his reaction to the police notice.
