Three senior citizens murdered in Jalpaiguri on Friday night in 24 hours

Two murders were reported from Dhupguri block, and another from Danguajhar tea estate

Two murders were reported from Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district on Saturday and one more from Danguajhar tea estate on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town on Friday night.

According to police sources, Pushpa Gayan, a 75-year-old retired employee of the state power department, who used to live in Surya Sen Colony in ward five of Dhupguri town, was found dead. Her body was packed in a sack and left near her house.

She went out of her house on Friday afternoon and didn’t return.

A police team recovered the body. Later in the day, Bacchu aka Nattu Acharjee, a resident of the same locality, was arrested. He was spotted in the CCTV footage and would be interrogated, said sources.

In another incident, Shanti Roy, 63, of the Mallickshobha area of Dhupguri, was found dead in a drain near his house on Saturday morning with his throat slit, said local sources.

Police recovered the body and started a probe.

In the third incident, Palsu Oran, 65, a retired worker of the Danguajhar tea estate on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri, was allegedly killed by his son Dinu on Friday night.

Sources said the elderly man had an altercation with his son, a habitual drunkard. Then Dinu apparently hit his father on the head with a stick. Oran collapsed on the spot.

A team from Kotwali police station arrested Dinu.

Drowning death

Santhal Sao, 64, of Sukhanibusty in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri, drowned in the Jaldhaka river on Saturday afternoon.

Police sources said that around 4pm, Sao was wading through the river to reach the other bank where he had left his cattle for grazing. Suddenly, the water level rose and he was washed away. His body was found later at Khayerbari, which is around 8km downstream.
