District police in Malda have acted on a tip-off and arrested three persons on Tuesday night in two separate incidents and seized 560 grams of brown sugar — a derivative of heroin — from them.
The cost of 560 gram of narcotic substance is around Rs 15 lakh, police sources said.
Sources said a team of the Englishbazar police station raised a checkpoint in the town on Tuesday night and intercepted Md Azaz and Md Sakib, who were riding a two-wheeler that bore no registration plate.
As police frisked them, around 60 grams of brown sugar was recovered from the duo. Both were immediately taken into custody.
A team of Kaliachak police station arrested Mithun Pramanik of Gazole from Shasani in Kaliachak on Tuesday night and seized 500 grams of brown sugar from him.
During preliminary investigations, police found that Pramanik was a narcotics dealer. “He needs to be interrogated to gather more information about his associates,” said a police officer.
With these arrests, police have seized around 3kg of brown sugar and arrested six persons related to the contraband in the past five days in Malda district.
