The Northeast Frontier Railway has decided to suspend regular services of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling for three days from Friday. Incessant rains in the past couple of days affected tracks and bridges along the route.
“There was heavy downpour in the hills which triggered a few landslides. Two bridges (between Kurseong and Ghoom), have also been affected,” said a DHR official.
During this period, railway authorities have also decided on maintenance work.
“As monsoon is likely to stay at least for one month in the region, and the tourist season will start from next month, we will do necessary repairs immediately so that regular train services do not get disrupted during the festive season,” the official added.
The DHR joy ride service from Darjeeling to Ghoom to Darjeeling will, however, run without any disruption during this three-day period. There are eight joy ride services operational from Darjeeling.
