Three Cricket Association of Bengal selectors for the Bengal women’s team were injured after their car rear-ended a stationary truck in East Burdwan’s Memari on Sunday.

Sources said Shyama Dey, Purnima Choudhury and Chandana Mukherjee were being driven in a Toyota Innova to Birbhum’s Khoirasol when the accident occurred around 9am.

“They were on their way to an Under-23 selection match,” said a CAB source, adding the trio and their driver Biswajit Paridhar were rushed to a private hospital where they were still admitted and stable.

Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly has asked association officials to ensure that the selectors get the best treatment.

CAB secretary Avishek Dalmiya and joint secretary Debabrata Das reached the Burdwan hospital on Sunday evening and met the selectors.

“We have talked to the doctors. The selectors are out of danger now. Sourav Ganguly called me and enquired about their health. He advised us to give them the best treatment,” said Susanta Banerjee, a member of the CAB’s apex committee who was also at the Burdwan hospital.

“All four suffered multiple fractures. They are at the CAMRI Multispeciality Hospital in Burdwan but will be shifted to Apollo hospital on Monday,” said CAB secretary Dalmiya.

Hospital sources said three of the patients were admitted to the ICU and one to the general ward. “Two of them will have to undergo surgery for facial injuries and bone fractures,” said a source.

“The condition of women patients is stable now. The driver was serious when he was admitted to the hospital,” said Priyanka Choudhury, human resources manager at CAMRI hospital.

Police said the accident occurred near Kanaidanga village in Memari. “The car was speeding and was completely smashed from the front. We have seized both vehicles,” said Bhaskar Mukherjee, the police chief of East Burdwan.

A selection match for the CAB Under-23 women’s team was to be played in Khoirasol on Sunday morning. “It is very unfortunate that the selectors met with the accident. The match will be held on Monday,” said Vidyasagar Shaw, general secretary of the Birbhum district sports association.
