Police seized two illegal consignments of narcotics and foreign cigarettes estimated at Rs 48 lakh from the Bengal-Assam border in Alipurduar district on Thursday evening and arrested three persons in this connection.
A police team intercepted a truck at Pakriguri, the entry point to Bengal as it reached there from northeast, and recovered 12 packets of opium concealed behind the driver’s seat. “The seized opium costs around Rs 24 lakh. Joga Ram, the driver who is from Rajasthan, has been arrested,” said an officer.
Later, another truck, that also entered the state from Assam, was intercepted and
foreign cigarettes of around Rs 24 lakh was seized. Aftab Hakim of Delhi, and Asfaq, from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested.
The trio were produced in a local court here on Friday and were remanded in police custody for 10 days.
