A team of the state forest department acted on a tip-off and nabbed three persons on Tuesday evening with deerskin and some pangolin scales on them.
Parveen Kaswan, the divisional forest officer of Jaldapara wildlife division, said they intercepted a car near Badurbagan in Cooch Behar.
"As our men searched the vehicle, they found a hog deer's skin and some pangolin scales inside. There were three persons in the car. All of them have been arrested,” he said.
The trio are Assam's Swapan Roy and Papai Saha (Dhubri) and Shanta Rangdar (Goalpara).
On Wednesday, the trio were produced at a local court in Alipurduar. The court heard the case and sent them in judicial custody for 14 days.
Conviction
The chief judicial magistrate's court in Alipurduar ordered five years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on Dhruba Newar of the Chuniajhora tea estate, who convicted of smuggling six hill mynahs.
On October 23, the same court had ordered five years' rigorous imprisonment and ₹26,000 as fine for three persons involved in smuggling animal parts.
