Son of slain Congress councillor in Jhalda, Tapan Kandu, has lodged a police complaint, accusing a local Trinamul worker of threatening to kill him if he proceeds with the CBI probe into his father’s murder.
“I was at a market in Jhalda yesterday (Saturday. )Suddenly, Bhim Tiwary appeared in front of me and threatened me with dire consequences,” said Tapan’s son Deb Kandu, 18.
He said Tiwary had accused his family members of going too far on the murder of Tapan and threatened that he would face his father’s fate if they did not stop pursuing the case. “I was so scared and returned home. They threatened me to do what they did to my father,” said Deb, who lodged a police complaint on Saturday night.
Bhim was among six persons whose names figured in the FIR lodged by Tapan’s wife Purnima Kandu after the murder. Tapan was shot dead by three motorcycle-borne assailants on March 13 while he was on an evening stroll with wife.
The case is now being probed by the CBI which arrested five persons. A few days ago, the CBI had interrogated Bhim.
Bhim denied the allegation and said the Kandus were bringing false charges against him. “I have no connection with the murder and I did not threaten anybody,” said Bhim.
Tapan’s wife Purnima is worried about the safety and security of her son.
“We have lodged a police complaint but don’t think they will do anything. I will inform the CBI and the court as well about the threat,” she said.
Former Jhalda MLA Nepal Mahato said Trinamul-backed goons had targeted Tapan’s family members. “They first murdered Tapan and now they have targeted his family. We have no faith in the police,” said Mahato.
The police said they had received a complaint and an investigation was on.
Niranjan Baishnab, a witness to the murder of Tapan, was found hanging at his residence later. This case is also being probed by the CBI after a Calcutta High Court order.
