A Visva-Bharati student was arrested from Jharkhand on Sunday in connection with an alleged attack on fellow students at a hostel and later at a hospital run by the varsity on the night of January 15.

Sulov Karmakar, a third-year undergraduate student of modern history, is the third student to be arrested in connection with the incident.

Varsity sources said Karmakar was the “student warden” at the Vidya-Bhavana Senior Boys’ Hostel, where a group of students were allegedly attacked for having protested a lecture by BJP Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta on the campus a week before.

“We had already arrested two students in connection with the case. The third accused was arrested from Jharkhand today. He will be produced in court on Monday,” said Shyam Singh, Birbhum’s police chief.

Achintya Bagdi, a known student leader, was among the two who had already been picked by the police.

The prompt action against the attackers has become a talking point on the campus in the backdrop of Delhi police’s apparent apathy towards the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, who faced attacks by alleged ABVP supporters on January 5.

“The complaint was against three students and others. Police arrested all the three named in the FIR within three days. We are happy with their actions,” said a student.

“We thank the police and the government for taking immediate action against the accused. It proved the difference between the Bengal police and the Delhi police,” Swapnanil Mukherjee, one of the students injured in the January 15 attack, said on Sunday.

In a related development, the Trinamul Congress will take out a march on Monday to condemn Visva-Bharati’s decision to “promote the BJP’s agenda on the Citizenship. The march will also be to protest recent decisions by varsity officials that “went against the traditions in Santiniketan”.

“Senior party leaders will hold a protest rally against Visva-Bharati and its vice-chancellor for organising lectures on the the CAA to promote the BJP’s agenda. Several traditions are at stake. We will take out the protest march on Monday morning on campus,” said Arup Roy, a Trinamul councillor.
