The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation will go to the polls on Saturday. What voters there should know and how it is likely to affect neighbouring Calcutta:

What: The 41 wards of the corporation — covering areas like Salt Lake, Kestopur, Baguiati, Hatiara, Teghoria, Kalindi and pockets of Rajarhat — will vote to select their civic representatives.

Voting starts: 7am on Saturday

Voting ends: Officially 6.30pm (voters who stand in the queue before 6.30pm will be allowed to vote)

Dry day: All liquor shops in the 41 wards will remain closed till the end of the polls. Restaurants licenced to serve liquor may remain open but cannot serve liquor till the polls end. No restriction on the sale of alcohol beyond the 41 wards.

Shops and shopping malls: Shops within 200 metres of polling stations will remain closed on Saturday. There is no restriction on markets in various blocks that are beyond 200 metres of any polling station. City Centre I & II will remain closed till 6pm on Saturday.

Public transport: Police said there was no restriction on the movement of private or public vehicles beyond 200 metres of polling stations. However, there could be fewer autos and private buses in Bidhannagar on Saturday as most have been engaged in election duties.

Identity cards to be shown at polling stations: Any of these cards — electoral photo identity card, Aadhaar card, MNREGA job card, passbook with photograph issued by bank/post office, health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of labour ministry.

Police arrangements: Around 4,500 cops will be deployed on Saturday There will be 48 sector vehicles, 30 mobile patrols, 11 heavy radio flying squads, 18 quick response teams and 22 checkpoints.
