A 17-year-old boy was run over by a bus on Tuesday after he slipped and fell on the road while getting off the vehicle that was still moving.

The accident took place near pillar No. 37 of Howrah bridge when Sreeansh Jaiswal was on his way to Maniktala from Howrah.

Sreeansh was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injures later at night.

The boy, whose home is in Yogipara Bylane of Maniktala, lived at his maternal uncle’s home in Golabari, Howrah.

“He was travelling with a friend. When the other youth jumped out of the moving bus, Sreeansh followed but he lost balance and slipped,” said an officer of the traffic police department.

Sreeansh suffered multiple injuries after the rear wheels of the bus on the Howrah-Metiabruz route ran over his waist, police officers said.

The minibus was seized by officers of North Port police station and the driver arrested under charges of rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence.

Buses — both private and government — are often accused of reckless driving, picking up and dropping passengers in the middle of the road and jumping signals trying to overtake another bus on the same route.

The number of fatal accidents in the city went down from 294 in 2018 to 267 in 2019, but Calcutta police have failed to curb bus accidents — 470 in 2018 and 497 in 2019.

Senior police officers, however, pointed out the passenger was at fault in Tuesday’s accident.

“Prosecution of buses or other vehicles will not help if there is no awareness among passengers and pedestrians. There was possibly nothing that the driver or the helper could have done if a passenger chose to alight from the bus while it was still moving,” an officer said .

Traffic cops said buses with doors that shut could help check such accidents.
