Water supply to more than half of Calcutta will remain suspended from 10am on Saturday till 7am on Sunday because of repairs at the Tallah pumping station, a Calcutta Municipal Corporation official said on Monday.

About 2.5 million people from Sinthee to Bhowanipore get water from the Tallah pumping station. Places like Dalhousie, Maidan, Kidderpore, Mominpore, Kalighat, Deshapriya Park, Kusthia and parts of Kasba would be affected because of the shutdown, the official said.

The areas under Borough I to VII of the CMC will not get water because of the Tallah shutdown. Besides, wards 66 to 74, and 83 to 91, too, will not get water for a large part of Saturday.

Bidhannagar, too, will be affected as the Tallah utility supplies 20 million gallons of water a day to the township.

Water will be supplied between 7am and 10am on Saturday, after which it will be stopped, the official said.

“We will replace some valves in the deep-diameter water pipes that supply water from Tallah to the distribution network,” he said.

The valves, which are used to regulate the flow of water, are defective. If the valves do not function at optimum, there will be problems in water distribution, the official said.

The pumping station supplies 210 million gallons of water every day, more than half of the daily supply of 400 million gallons a day in the Calcutta Municipal area, he said.

Some maintenance work will be carried out at the Palta water treatment plant, too. The treated water is sent to the Tallah pumping station, from where it is distributed.

“We will use this opportunity to carry out maintenance work at several booster pumping stations that store the Tallah water,” the official said.

“Work will be carried out at the booster pumping stations in Mohammad Ali Park, Wellington Square, Auckland Square, Bagmari, Park Circus, and Kasba.”
