The Tallah bridge will be closed to goods vehicles for an indefinite period from 6am on Saturday.
The expansion joints of the bridge, a key link between Shyambazar and BT Road in north Calcutta, need to be replaced because they have outlived their longevity, according to PWD officials.
The bar is only on goods vehicles. Buses, taxis and other vehicles will be allowed to ply, police said. Goods vehicles will be diverted to Chitpore bridge, which has been shut since February for a health check.
The Chitpore bridge will be opened to take the load of the diverted north-bound traffic, the police said.
Trucks headed south will be diverted to Belghoria Expressway, Jessore Road, VIP Road and the Bypass, a traffic police officer said.
Vidyasagar Setu, too, will be used as an alternative route.
Truck movement timings in the city will be tweaked. Trucks will ply only between 10pm and 6am, the police said. Trucks now ply between noon and 4pm and 10pm and 6am.
