Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition, on Wednesday, raised questions on the handling of explosives seized from the site of the Duttapukur blast in North 24-Parganas and accused the local police of sending off recovered items to "unknown" locations.

Nine persons were killed in a blast at an illegal fireworks unit at Mojpole-Paschimpara village in Duttapukur on Sunday.

"My sources confirm that the process of disposal was a mere hogwash, as most of the substances brought in were sent off to different unknown locations through different vehicles and the premises of the Office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic); Barasat Police District was used as a junction point for logistical support," he wrote on X.

In the long tweet, Adhikari said heaps of explosives, raw materials and other inflammable objects seized from Mojpole under the Duttapukur police station were brought to the office of the deputy superintendent of police (traffic) under the Barsat police district. He then added three questions.

He asked if the details of the seized items "were documented in the Seizure List" and why the police did not seek expert intervention to segregate the items.

"Is the Office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic); Barasat Police District a Dumping Site? Why were such large quantities of explosive & inflammable materials brought in there, that too within a densely populated locality...?" Adhikari added.

He alleged that water was sprayed on these substances indiscriminately, which could have led to an explosion. "Who took the decision to dispose (of) these substances in this manner without the involvement of Experts?" Adhikari asked. A video of individuals looking like firemen sprinkling water on a heap was attached to the tweet.

Lastly, Adhikari asked if the deputy superintendent of police (traffic) would be able to produce CCTV footage of the office if it is sought for investigative purposes.

CPM's central committee member Sujan Chakraborty also accused the ruling Trinamul of apathy towards solving the problem of illegal fireworks units in the state. He said the Duttapukur incident was a reminder that the law and order in Bengal had broken down.

He also alleged the state was juggling with the number of deaths in these explosions.

"All such charges by the BJP and CPM are bogus. They are politicising a tragic incident.... The government even did not spare police officers in this connection," Trinamul spokesperson Tanmoy Ghosh said.

Bhaskar Mukherjee, SP, Barasat police district, while not referring to any politician, said the entire process of destroying the recovered explosives was carried properly and every step was documented. "If we ever need to produce these documents in court we can do that," he said.
