Activities at Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) and its 56 regional centres have been disrupted for the last four days as the non-teaching staff members have been protesting delays in promotion.

Nearly a thousand non-teaching staff members of the university have been holding protests at all the centres and the headquarters in Delhi. They have stayed away from daily work such as putting up and processing files or providing secretarial support to senior officials.

They alleged that the in-charge vice-chancellor (VC), Professor Uma Kanjilal, had refused to execute a decision of the Board Of Management (BOM), the top decision-making body of the institution, to promote the eligible persons among them.

Directors of two university departments and a senior official confirmed that non-teaching employees have not been working for the last four days.

One non-teaching employee said the BOM is thegoverning body of the institution. Once a decision istaken by the BOM, it must be implemented.

He said a departmental promotion committee (DPC) selected 50 officials eligible for promotion to assistant registrar position.

The BOM last year approved the recommendation of the committee. The administration is supposed to promote them to the assistant registrar posts according to the available vacancies arising after the retirement of in-service assistant registrars.
