A delegation of BJP MLAs led by Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday met the family members of a minor girl who had died a few weeks after a suicide bid following molestation in the Maynaguri block of Jalpaiguri on Friday.

“We are meeting all families which are victims of different crimes in the state in the recent past. Today, we visited the family of a girl who was forced to take her own life because those who had tormented her threatened her relatives with dire consequences,” Adhikari said after talking to the bereaved parents.

Although Adhikari insisted that the Maynaguri incident should be probed by the CBI, the girl’s parents said they had faith in police. “The Opposition leader spoke about the CBI probe. We have made it clear that we have complete confidence in the state police,” said the girl’s father.

Adhikari said: “They have faith in the police. As of late, the police have become a bit active. But we believe a CBI probe can deliver speedy justice.”

While Adhikari and other BJP leaders were talking to the girl’s parents, the bed on which they were sitting cracked and collapsed. Adhikari somehow balanced himself.

Earlier in the day, the Opposition leader supported Siliguri BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh’s demand that the Siliguri subdivision be kept out of the state government’s decision to advance the summer vacation for schools by two weeks because of the heat-wave-like situation in central and southern districts.

“His demand is logical. The state government doesn’t want schools to reopen,” said Adhikari.
