Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, visited North Dinajpur on Friday and met three bereaved families in the district.

He met the families of the 17-year-old girl whose body was found on April 21, and Mrityunjoy Barman, the youth of Chandga village who was allegedly gunned down by police on April 27, and also interacted with Asim Debsharma, the migrant worker who last Sunday carried his five-month-old son’s body in a bag by bus for 200km for the lack of an affordable hearse, and his wife Sagari.

“In the girl’s case, the police came up with a theory of suicide even before post-mortem was conducted. Also, no steps were taken against the police officer who had shot Mrityunjoy. The families have demanded a CBI probe and we stand in their support,” said Adhikari.

After the 17-year-old girl was found dead in her village, her family alleged she had been raped and murdered and sought a CBI probe. A forum of Rajbanshis and tribals held a protest march in Kaliaganj on April 25, with some protesters turning violent and setting the local police station on fire. They also severely beat up police personnel and civic volunteers.

On April 26 night, the police turned up at Chandga in search of people in the mob. Early on April 27, Mrityunjoy, 33, was allegedly shot dead by the police when he protested against some arrests.

Around 2pm on Friday, Adhikari reached a Bharat Sevashram Sangha unit in Kunor of Kaliaganj block. There, he met Asim and Sagari and gave them some financial assistance. He also handed over Rs 12 lakh to the Sangha for introducing a hearse service.

From there, he went tothe girl’s village and then reached Chandga, where he met Mrityunjoy’s father and others.

“We have arranged a job for Gouri Barman, Mrityunjoy’s wife. Our party is always there for these families who have faced the atrocity and apathy of the Trinamul government,” he said.

Recently, Calcutta High Court formed a three-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the girl’s death.

The CID, on the other hand, is probing the death of Mrityunjoy.
