Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, on Wednesday joined a march of candidates for Group D jobs in schools that passed by a crossing not far from Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office.
Adhikari, who promised to stand by Group D candidates’ battle against the state government, urged them to organise a march to Nabanna with one lakh people that he would lead.
“I will be with all those who were qualified but did not get jobs because of the recruitment scam. I urge you (the candidates) to take out a march of one lakh people to Nabanna and I will be in front of that,” said the Nandigram BJP MLA.
The march on Wednesday started from the Shakespeare Sarani-AJC Bose Road crossing and ended at the Hazra crossing, not far from chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. It went through the Exide crossing and the SP Mukherjee Road.
A huge police arrangement was made in front of Trinamul’s Camac Street office and the march was restricted on a portion of the road to avert any untoward incident.
“Trinamul runs with the help of the police only.... Organise such a huge rally that police’s bullets and tear-gas shells are found insufficient to resist you,” said Adhikari.
Trinamul accused Adhikari of making the march of Group-D candidates political and attempting to use them to fulfill the political agenda of the BJP.
“Suvendu Adhikari and the Bengal BJP had no base to organise a rally of one lakh people and that is why he asked the Group-D candidates to take out such a march to Nabanna. He actually provoked the employees to breach law and order. I hope those people would not be provoked,” Trinamul state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said.
Adhikari, however, denied the charge that he had made the rally of the Group D job aspirants political and said he had participated in it as the leader of the Opposition.
“I have joined this rally as leader of the Opposition. I am playing the role that an Opposition leader should. I would be with them always and called a meeting with them on October 3. I would provide them with legal support to fight their battle against the Mamata Banerjee government,” Adhikari told journalists.
