Suspected Maoists called a strike on Tuesday in Jungle Mahal area through posters in Purulia to protest the alleged murders of two of their members, alarming local Trinamul leaders.

“We can’t ignore this. We will talk to senior police officers,” said Sujoy Banerjee, a Trinamul leader and sabhadhipati of Purulia zilla parishad.

Several posters were found in Purulia’s Baghmundi police station area on Monday. “We want revenge for the killings of our brothers Rimil and Biplab (Maoist leaders)… We call a strike on March 1,” a poster reads.

In another poster, the Maoists have asked senior police officers, including superintendents and deputy superintendents of police, why they were not communicating the voice of the people to the state government. The posters, which were handwritten with red ink, did not specify what they wanted the cops to convey to the state government.

“It could be the grievances of the people,” said a police officer.

Police, however, are not taking the posters seriously and have assured to find out those behind the posters.

“We are yet to be informed about such posters. We will find out whether they are the handiwork of Maoists,” said Purulia police chief S. Selvamurugan.
