The BJP on Monday used the Supreme Court of India's judgment on the R.G. Kar tragedy to intensify its demand for Mamata Banerjee's resignation, claiming that the order indicated a lack of trust in Bengal police and administration.
"The verdict of the Supreme Court in a different way suggested that it has no confidence in the state police and administration and that is why the court has ordered the deployment of central force at RG Kar. Therefore, we are demanding the immediate resignation of our health and police (home) minister, who, unfortunately, is also our chief minister," said state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar.
Majumdar, also a junior Union minister, said the Supreme Court had echoed concerns he and his party had previously highlighted.
"We want Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal removed, and the chief minister to resign without delay," added the BJP's Balurghat MP.
While Majumdar welcomed the court's order, leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari expressed disappointment, saying he had expected a stronger ruling.
"The Supreme Court has taken steps to ensure the safety and security of women employees in their workplaces. However, its verdict did not directly address the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar. I had hoped for a stronger ruling," said the Nandigram MLA.
"We hope the court will take action to prevent a recurrence of such events. Additionally, I expect the Supreme Court to take firm measures to stop the vandalism and evidence-tampering that occurred there," he added.
The Trinamool Congress welcomed the verdict, emphasising how it highlighted the nationwide security issues faced by women.
"The Supreme Court’s observations are applicable to the whole country, not only Bengal. The Supreme Court has observed that such incidents of rape and murder are happening across the country. To avoid such incidents, we think the apex court’s directives are logical. To prevent a social disease like rape across the country. We welcome the observations," said Trinamool's Kunal Ghosh.
"Trinamool doesn’t have any problem with the deployment of central forces at RG Kar," he added.
However, Trinamool sources said the deployment of central forces at RG Kar was a demand of the BJP and the ruling indicated that the state had failed to provide security to the heritage medical institution.
TMC leaders appealed to the protesting doctors to resume their services, highlighting the court's concern about continuing medical education and patient care.
"The cease-work of the doctors is affecting the welfare of ordinary citizens. The Supreme Court has intervened and taken steps regarding the whole country. Even if they don't consider the court's request to resume their duties, it should be understood that there is some other matter in it," said Ghosh.
"When the Supreme Court is taking steps over the matter, on what logic will the doctors continue their cease-work?" he asked.
CPM leader and senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya also welcomed the verdict, citing its "strong reservations" about the police investigation since the gruesome incident took place.
"There is a specific ruling on the RG Kar incident, where the apex court expressed strong reservations about the police investigation," he said.
The Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: "The security at RG Kar has been compromised, and there is a demand for central forces in the hospital."
"We welcome the Supreme Court's order recommending that central forces take over security at the hospital," he added.
