The rift in the Bengal unit of the BJP tumbled out in the open once again on Monday when the party’s state president Sukanta Majumdar swatted away allegations levelled by his predecessor Dilip Ghosh about deficiencies in the organisation.

“A lot of things are said like this. When Dilipda was the state president, I used to see Mukulda (Roy) would complain that there is no organisation,” Majumdar said while addressing journalists on the sidelines of an event commemorating the birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy at the National Library in Calcutta.

Majumdar, however, added that he didn’t wish to discuss an organisational issue in the public.

Majumdar was reacting to allegations made by Ghosh at the party’s state executive meeting on Sunday, which also took place at the National Library auditorium. According to sources, the Midnapore MP had alleged that the party’s organisation had several deficiencies and he blamed it on those helming the party in all organisational posts.

“These people are all new and untrained.... But the old timers are not given enough importance,” Ghosh had apparently said in his address.

Getting back at his predecessor, Majumdar said everyone started inexperienced but he had more political experience when he became the state chief than Ghosh.

Ghosh was the Bengal BJP chief from 2015 until September 2021 before he was rather unceremoniously replaced by Majumdar by the party’s central leadership. Though it was expected that he would be allowed to continue till 2022 and would be given a farewell befitting his contribution as the most successful Bengal BJP head, his tenure was cut short.

Ghosh was made a national vice-president of the party to make way for Majumdar. Since then the two have hardly been on the same page.
